Primeval episodes - season 2

EPISODE 1

Night at a local shopping mall. Something on a CCTV monitor grabs the attention of the security guards. They investigate, only to be attacked by a ferocious Jurassic era Utahraptor. The anomalies are back…

At the original anomaly site Cutter grapples with Claudia Brown’s disappearance. A new second in command has taken her place in the team – the oily Oliver Leek. Not only that but the team now have a headquarters. A hi-tech, highly sophisticated operations base called the Anomaly Research Centre, or ARC. No one believes Cutter when he tries to explain that the present has altered, resulting in Claudia’s disappearance. In fact they think he has gone mad. But there is not time for idle chat as the team get a call reporting a creature incursion at a shopping mall.

Once on site the team arm themselves with tranquilizer guns. Stephen tries to discuss his youthful affair with Helen, but Cutter is unwilling to confront the issue. While the others investigate the anomaly behind the bowling alley, Connor heads for the confectionary, only to find a hungry raptor lurking amongst the sweets and soft drinks. Despite a narrow escape, Cutter remains adamant that they should capture the raptors and put them back where they belong - alive. The team face another scare when they hear what they think is the creature coming back for them - only to find it is a cleaner who has been left behind when the mall was evacuated.

During their battle in the mall Cutter notices that all the radios seem to be suffering from some kind of mysterious electronic interference and he suspects it to be connected to the anomalies. He realises they can now build a detector tuned to the same wavelength to locate new anomalies.

The race is on to capture the raptors and take them back where they belong before the anomaly closes.

EPISODE 2

Cutter and the team are joined by a new PR guru in the guise of Jenny Lewis. Sharp, cynical and witty, she almost immediately develops a sparky and adversarial relationship with Cutter. The fact she looks every inch like Claudia Brown but has no recollection of her doppelganger adds even more intrigue.

Meanwhile Connor is picked up in a video store by a beautiful young woman called Caroline. Caroline is everything Connor is not. Poised, well connected and effortlessly sexy, her interest in him is all the more surprising for it. But Connor isn't waiting around to analyse his good fortune. Right from the beginning Abby takes against Caroline for reasons even she herself doesn't quite understand.

But meanwhile...a gleaming new skyscraper in the centre of the city has quickly developed a reputation for teething problems in its electronics so no one is surprised when smoke is spotted creeping out from the server room. On inspection the janitor finds a thick layer of mist hugging the floor and a foul sulphurous smell - but no fire. Then something moves in the mist and he is suddenly yanked out of sight by a shadowy creature... the mist continues to spread...

Cutter and Connor get down to the serious work of trying to build an anomaly detector system. For the first time since the crisis began the team will no longer be dependent on luck to find the anomalies. Lester is sceptical of the plan but Leek is enthusiastic and Lester reluctantly agrees a budget. Connor is immediately set to work.

At the skyscraper panicking staff flee as the sinister mist oozes down the stairs and lift wells, accompanied by a foul stench of rotting matter. A fire crew arrive and enter a surreal office waist high in sulphurous fog. They are attacked by shadowy, giant creatures; we see tantalising glimpses of these odd, frightening beasts that seem to live inside the mist. The skyscraper is evacuated but in one glass-walled meeting room a group of executives assume the warning alarm is nothing more than a drill. They cannot yet see the mist enveloping them...

By the time the team arrive the skyscraper is filling with fog. While they explore offices full of abandoned chairs and desks they discover that there are giant carnivorous worms moving inside it. Leaping from desk to desk they only just manage to escape with their lives, while a fireman is killed horribly. Jenny, who has been appointed as operations manager on the ground (reporting directly to Leek and Lester) is given her first taste of her new job and nearly breaks down with horror when she realises what she is dealing with. But she recovers, showing real guts in the process and Cutter cannot help being impressed, even though the two of them find themselves in almost constant opposition.

The race is on to rescue the executives in the meeting room before the worms get to them first. In the process Stephen gets separated and gets trapped in a lift shaft. Cutter realises the worms can't survive outside the fog and Connor and Abby set about turning up the heating in the building. They succeed in doing this but no one is prepared for the effect the heat has on these deadly creatures…

EPISODE 3

A cocky young paintballer in a holiday/adventure park finds himself stalked through the undergrowth; his screams echo through the wilderness as he is torn to shreds by a terrifying creature. Meanwhile at the ARC, Cutter and Connor unveil the new anomaly detector. Everything appears to be in working order but the machine apparently fails at the first time of asking when reports come in of a creature attack. Lester is furious but Connor is convinced there is nothing wrong with the machine.

The team investigates and Cutter comes to believe that the attack, although horrible, could be relatively conventional. The animal to blame could be a rogue big cat. Cutter and nervous Deputy Manager, Valerie insist that the park should be evacuated, but Jenny refuses, believing it would draw too much attention from the press. As the team go in search of the animal Connor is left to look after the safety of the holiday-makers. He disgraces himself when he batters the furry park mascot, thinking it is a real beast... while unbeknown to him the real menace is lurking very nearby...

On his way home the unfortunate mascot is attacked and ripped apart at a railway station; Stephen, who is with Valerie, hears the attack and rushes to investigate. He sees the huge animal but is forced to let it flee as he looks after the terrified Valerie. He is convinced it is too big to be any surviving species of big cat - it must be a creature from an anomaly. But with no firm evidence and no clear sighting, the team are baffled.

A train spotter has recorded the whole attack and to Jenny's horror he manages to upload pictures of the attack to the internet; while she deals with the media fall out, Cutter is more concerned by what he finds on the pictures - the creature is a Smilodon, or sabre-tooth cat. There can be no doubt - this is an ancient creature. But why did the anomaly detector fail to work?

While Cutter and the team prepare traps for the creature they find a mutilated body buried in a shallow grave. The man was clearly mauled by the Smilodon but more perplexing is the fact that there must have been human intervention to bury him. Before Cutter can work out the implications of this the cat attacks them, drawn by the scent of the fresh meat they have put out as bait. Cutter is forced to take refuge on an adventure walkway slung between the trees, only to find the gigantic cat following him. Left clinging by his fingertips he finally manages to cut the rope bridge and send the cat tumbling to the ground.

When Cutter finds a photograph in the buried man's wallet, he realises that the cat must have come through an anomaly as a cub and become stranded, which explains why it didn't register on the Detector. He also knows who has been hiding it. The race is on to get to the person before they try to escape with the creature.

EPISODE 4

When an anomaly opens underwater a teenage boy is dragged into a flooded drain. During their frantic search for the boy Cutter and the team battle sinister creatures from the future. These mermaid-creatures are strong and intelligent and the team face their toughest incursion yet. Will everyone survive?

When an anomaly opens underwater a teenage boy is dragged into a flooded drain. Cutter and the team launch a frantic search that leads them from the drain to a nearby canal. Jenny narrowly escapes a tragic end when the boat she is in comes under attack by a shark, but a strange discovery during the creature's post-mortem suggests it may not have come from the past. The creature's secret weapon is a giant proboscis that shoots from its jaws to trap its prey, clear evidence of an unusual evolutionary development. It is from the future.

Stephen is convinced that there must be a second shark in the water and that is what killed the teenage boy, but Cutter isn't convinced. He thinks there is a different creature out there and he feels certain they are looking for it in the wrong place. Cutter disobeys Lester's order and follows his hunch. With the help of Connor and Abby he records some strange ‘singing' sounds coming from below the water. They then play them back, hoping to lure the creature to them. The plan works a little too well when a creatures jumps out of the water and grabs Abby, dragging her beneath the water.

The team desperately search the canal looking for Abby but they can find no trace of either her or the creature. They presume she must have drowned. Connor is beside himself but Cutter convinces Connor to help him find the creature rather than let Abby's death be in vain. They search a nearby warehouse that has apparently flooded and Connor is overjoyed to find Abby is still alive. This excitement is short lived when Abby is taken by a mer-creature and Cutter and Connor are left to fight the remaining mer-creatures on their own. Stephen arrives just in time to swing the battle in Cutter's favour and Connor goes after Abby.

ABBY is pushed through the anomaly to find herself stranded on an apocalyptic shoreline millions of years in the future. On the muddy sand the creatures gather, making an unearthly noise with their singing, like some kind of hideous band of aquatic stormtroopers. Connor comes through the anomaly after her but is he too late?

EPISODE 5

When a young girl chases her dog through an anomaly she finds herself trapped in a dangerous new world of desert and twinkling starts. Her wonderment quickly turns to panic when something inside the sand rises up - giant Silurian scorpions! Cutter and Stephen set out to rescue her but when the anomaly closes all three of them get marooned on the other side. Will they ever find their way home?

Taylor, an eleven-year-old girl, is walking her dog when she sees an anomaly in a nearby alley. The dog runs through it and Taylor follows him and finds herself in a dazzling new world of rocky terrain, desert and twinkling stars. But her wonderment quickly turns to panic when something inside the sand rises up and starts chasing her dog. She screams in horror...

Leek is alone at headquarters when the anomaly detector bursts into life. He quickly traces the location but instead of summoning the team he makes an untraceable call of his own - to the "cleaner" before causing the detector's computer to crash. Leek slips quietly away and goes to the anomaly where he finds the "cleaner" and a heavily armed group of mercenaries waiting for him. They enter the anomaly and we now realise how dangerous Leek really is beneath his bland exterior.

In the Silurian desert the mercenaries see Taylor stranded on a rocky outcrop but they refuse to help her. Suddenly the sand starts moving beneath them. Taylor yells at them to 'get off the sand' but it's to late. She covers her ears as she listens to the screams and gunfire echoing in the distance. Finally the desert swallows them up, leaving nothing but their scattered weapons and a deathly silence.

Meanwhile Connor finally gets the detector up and running and locates the anomaly site. Stephen and Cutter enter the strange Silurian world. They are surrounded by huge sand dunes. It is hard to breathe and the going is tough. They find weapons littered on the sand. Cutter is determined not to leave anything behind and the two men pick up the guns and pack them away safely.

The sand starts to move beneath them and they realise they have to move off the treacherous dunes as quickly as possible. Taylor yells at them to 'get off the sand' and they join her on her small rocky outcrop.

On the other side of the anomaly, Connor tells Abby he intends to break up with Caroline by text. Abby teases him about his cowardice, but is pleased that Caroline will finally be out of her life...Suddenly the anomaly starts to weaken.

Cutter, Stephen and Taylor move across the rocky terrain as fast as they can but the anomaly closes before they reach it. They are stranded... meanwhile all around them the sand ripples with the scorpions just beneath its surface. Will they ever find a way home?

EPISODE 6

An anomaly is detected and Lester's worst nightmare comes to pass - a giant Colombian mammoth has appeared and is rampaging on a busy motorway in broad daylight, scattering cars and sending pedestrians running for their lives.

In the last episode Cutter discovered conclusive evidence that someone has been shadowing the team and interfering in the past. His suspicions now fall on Lester and Jenny. He is determined to prove that one or the other of them - or perhaps both - is the traitor but his plans are interrupted when an anomaly is detected and Lester's worst nightmare comes to pass - a giant Colombian mammoth has appeared and is rampaging on a section of busy road in broad daylight, scattering cars and sending pedestrians running for their lives. Cutter and the team respond but Stephen is nowhere to be seen.

Dealing with the confused and angry mammoth requires every ounce of Cutter's ingenuity but when the anomaly closes Cutter faces an even greater problem - how do you hide a mammoth? With the press about to break through the cordon Jenny has erected, Cutter formulates a new plan and with the help of Connor and Abby manages to trap the mammoth in the back of a lorry.

The team get away with it by the skin of their teeth, but Cutter is bewildered and angry with Stephen when he finally turns up, too late to be any real help and with no convincing explanation for his absence. To make matters worse Stephen has brought Helen with him. Cutter refuses to talk to either of them, instead he is determined to track down the enemy within. He sets a trap, letting only Connor and Abby in on his plan. They fake the appearance of an anomaly on the detector to see who will go to it first, knowing that whoever it is must be the traitor. The plan works, and reveals that the traitor is... Jenny.

Cutter is badly shaken. When he confronts her, she claims to have no idea what he is talking about - she received an anonymous text telling her to meet him there. We now discover that it is actually Leek who has set up the innocent Jenny. Not only that, Leek has set a future predator loose at the ARC and has somehow programmed it to track down and kill Lester.

After a harrowing chase Lester manages to kill the predator and he tells his security force officers to find Leek and arrest him. Meanwhile Cutter and the team track down Caroline to a disused MOD base. Leek once again manages to fool them and he captures the team. When they come around they are shocked, not only to learn that Helen is in cahoots with Leek, but also that Leek has acquired a menagerie of creatures from different times.

EPISODE 7

Whilst Stephen battles a Silurian scorpion causing havoc at a busy beach, the rest of the team remain trapped in Leek's bunker. Cutter manages to save the others from the hungry jaws of a Sabre Tooth Cat but inadvertently frees all the creatures in the process. With roaming predators around every corner, the pressure is on for Cutter and the team to find their way out whilst trapping the creatures inside.

Whilst Cutter is reeling from the revelation that Helen helped Leek capture creatures from anomalies, Connor and Abby come face to face with Caroline. Abby demands to know the whereabouts of Rex but Caroline confesses she doesn't know and she pleads with Connor to forgive her.

Meanwhile Leek releases a Silurian scorpion at a busy beach and tells Lester to back off or there will be creatures released throughout the UK. Lester doesn't know that Cutter and the rest of the team are captured, and the only person he can reach is Stephen. Stephen responds but he tells Lester this will be the last time.

Whilst Stephen battles the scorpion, Abby, Connor and Jenny face a hungry sabre tooth cat. Cutter watches on in horror. In a desperate attempt to save them he makes Leek plug his laptop computer into the mainframe. By doing so the systems all suddenly fail and Cutter reveals Connor planted a virus in Leek's laptop which he just uploaded. The doors open allowing Connor, Abby and Jenny to escape, but so too do the doors of all the animal cages.

The team try to find their way out but in a bunker filled with angry and hungry rampaging creatures and the going is tough. Abby finds Rex and with his help they find a ventilation shaft to ground level and alert Lester to their whereabouts.

Meanwhile Cutter is being hunted through the bunker by one of Leek's future predators. In a gruelling fight Cutter manages to defeat the predator, but his relief is shortlived when Leek reveals he has a whole army of future predators, all under his control by neural clamps devices implanted in their spinal columns.

Faced with certain death Cutter manages to destroy one of the neural clamps. It short circuits all the neural clamps and releases the future predators from Leek's control. The beasts all turn on Leek and kill him, giving Cutter just enough time to escape. Cutter gets free but then meets Stephen and Helen. Stephen realises Helen has been lying to him all along and agrees to help Cutter trap the predators. Stephen and Cutter both realise that if the future predators escaped they could wipe out humanity. The race is on to save the world.
