Chapter 1
by Vern
Hannah Spearritt sobbed hard and long as she thought about the events that unfolded last night.
This must be how it feels. She felt her heart stop, then a sickening feeling in the pit of her stomach. She wondered if that was how her ex boyfriend felt. But guys always functioned in a different way. Now she was alone in a hotel room she had hastily checked in last night. This must be her retribution, she thought, for being fickle. Even so, this was too much a payback for her to stomach. They had been engaged – and now he wanted out.
She picked up her cellphone and dialled the number she so often did whenever she was down. She heard the ringing tone, then his voice. “Hi, you’ve reached Jon, leave me a message and I’ll get right back to you.”
Hannah decided that she wasn’t going to wait for him to call back – she was going to drive up all the way to his apartment. He wouldn’t mind, he was her best friend. Well, it used to be her boyfriend, but now that they had broken up…She shook her head, no, Jon was the one always there for her. He was always her best friend.
“Jon!” I knocked, hoping he was home. Honestly, I don’t know why I decided to come round instead of going home. I noticed my ring finger – it was empty. After last night, I decided it was only right to return it to him. He said he wanted out – that he wasn’t ready to be married. Everything he said, was carved into my mind.
