NEW OLD JO INTERVIEW |
Big Brother can often bring fame and fortune to those who make it onto the TV reality show, but for one housemate it brought nothing but misery.
Sky News interviewed S Club 7 singer Jo O'Meara after her eviction from the celebrity version of the programme earlier this year.
As yet another series comes to an end, she would be very happy if the show never saw the light of day again.
Its makers have already decided there will be no Celebrity Big Brother in 2008.
This year's all-star version saw Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty subjected to alleged racist bullying at the hands of several housemates.
But it was O'Meara who bore the brunt of the media backlash.
"I'm now on Prozac, I can't sleep, I can't eat and I've got a phobia of mirrors and helicopters," she told me at her friend's house in north London.
With her mother and best friend by her side, it was clear that this was a woman struggling to cope with life outside the Big Brother house.
"If it were to be done all over again, I would never have entered the house.
"That programme just chews people up and spits them out."
O'Meara said she had been given a "five-minute check-up" before going into the house and was then left to get on with life inside Celebrity BB.
As soon as she was evicted, she claimed she was left to pick up the pieces herself, with little or no help.
She added: "I would just say to anyone thinking of doing Big Brother to steer well clear. It wrecks lives.
"I only went on that show to get money to stop my house being repossessed. It almost ruined my life."
But given the modern thirst for fame and fortune, it seems a good bet that there will be no shortage of applicants if Big Brother emerges again in the summer of 2008.
